Magnetic Separation

Concept Explanation

Magnetic Separation

This method is used to separate substances when one of that substance is magnetic in nature. The separation is always done with the help of a magnet. For example, from a mixture of iron filings and sulphur, iron can be separated by this method. When a magnet is just brought over the mixture of iron filings and sulphur, iron filings get attached to the magnet. Sulphur, being a non - magnetic substance, does not attracted towards a magnet and hence is left behind.

Recycling centres use magnetic separation often to separate components from recycling, isolate metals, and purify ores. Overhead magnets, magnetic pulleys, and the magnetic drums were the methods used  in the recycling industry. Magnetic separation is also useful in mining iron as it is attached to a magnet.
